Management of Congenital Spinal Deformity -Case series

Abstract

Abstract : Background Congenital spinal deformities are among the most difficult deformities to treat.They are a   challenge both from a decision-making and a technical point of view. Many deformities do not require any treatment and further investigation follow up is needed,but,at their worst, they can challenge the surgeon cognitively and technically. We have reported the management of congenital scoliosis of 7 casesMaterials and methods 7 patients of Congenital scoliosis and Congenital kyphoscoliosis admitted in our   institute, studied serially. The mean age of patients are13.2 years ranges from 5 years to 17 years. All the patients admitted with complaints of progressive deformity since the average year of 3, pain in the back and cosmetic concerns. None of the patient had neurological deficit. Radiological evaluation done and diagnosis confirmed. All the patients were treated surgically with different surgical options like Hemivertebra excision and posterior instrumented fusion, In situ fusion,Posterior instrumented fusion etc.. Patients were followed up and results analysed.Results. After surgery all the patients were pain free and deformity reduced in cosmetic aspect.Post operative radiological analysis done. Cobbs  angle were reduced in all patients. No neurological deficit after surgery.Conclusion Decision making regarding                         management in congenital scoliosis is difficult.It depends on the age ,type of deformity. Early management is necessary for the progressive curves to prevent complication
