Endoscopic Transoral Resection of a Parapharyngeal Mass – A Case Report

Indra T, Pradeep Ram S S .

Abstract

Tumors of the Parapharyngeal Space are      uncommon, comprising of 0.5% of all head and neck     neoplasms. They are mostly benign with a salivary or  neurogenic origin. The traditional approach to    parapharyngeal space masses include the transcervical and transparotid routes with or without mandibulotomy. The transoral route is used less often. A 27-year-old female presented to our hospital with a 1-year history of a mass visualised in the left tonsillar fossa with a swelling palpable over the left submandibular region. Radiologic studies showed a large tumor in the prestyloid compartment of the Parapharyngeal Space without involvement of the major salivary glands and carotid vessels. After thorough   evaluation, excision of the mass was done using the transoral approach under endoscopic guidance. A  histopathological diagnosis of Pleomorphic Adenoma was made. This had originated from a minor salivary gland within the Parapharyngeal space.

Key Words: Parapharyngeal mass, transoral approach, pleomorphic adenoma, minor salivary gland tumor.
