A Case Report of Intraoperative Pulmonary Embolism

Shanmugapriya G, Vasukinathan A, Edward .

Abstract

Acute pulmonary embolism carries a high risk for mobidity and mortality. Actual incidence and mortality rates for pulmonary embolism are unknown secondary to the vague clinical presentation requiring high index of suspicion for clinical diagnosis.

We are reporting a case of acute pulmonary     embolism during an orthopedic procedure under regional anesthesia. A 49 yr old male with proximal femur fracture and anterior dislocation of hip underwent closed reduction. He was known case of treated pulmonary tuberculosis with left destroyed lung due to fibrosis and cavitation. He    developed sudden acute pulmonary embolism immediately following closed reduction which was evidenced by      transthoracic echocardiogram. Patient was resusicitated and treated with anticoagulation therapy. After stabilisation he was shifted to higher centre for thrombectomy and futher management.
