SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF FAILED DEVICE OCCLUSION OF MITRAL PARAVALVULAR LEAK

PUNITHAKUMAR R .

Abstract

Paravalvular leak is a relatively uncommon but potentially serious complication of any surgical valve               replacement and it is observed in 17 of patients after a mitral valve replacement. Percutaneous closure has been shown to be a safe and feasible therapy in occluding the paravalvular leak.If transcutaneous closure is not possible in case of large and inappropriate defects, surgical closure is indicated.           However Percutaneous closure has its own complication like early and late dislodgement of the device which needs regular follow up. In our case during Percutaneous closure of defect, device slipped in to the left ventricle which was retrieved          surgically.
