RENAL LEIOMYOSARCOMA IN PREGNANCY A RARE PRESENTATION
Abstract
Sarcomas represent 1 to 2 percent of all
malignant renal tumors in adults, with a
peak incidence in the fifth decade of life.
Leiomyosarcoma is the most common
histologic subtype of renal sarcoma, accounting
for 50 to 60 percent of such tumors.
We would like to present a case of
leiomyosarcoma in pregnancy.A 21yrs
old female who was pregnant (24weeks)
presented to us with history of total,
painless hematuria of 10 days duration
which was not associated with clots. On
examination there was a vague mass in
the left loin and uterus was 24wks.Other
systemic examinations were normal. Her
routine blood and urine examination was
normal. Since the patient was pregnant,
she underwent an MRI scan of the abdomen
which revealed a mass in the left
kidney. Patient underwent left radical
nephrectomy and recovered well. Final
diagnosis came out as Leiomyosarcoma.
Eventhough sarcomas are a
rare diagnosis in kidneys, they carry a dismal
prognosis. Moreover renal tumours
during pregnancy itself are rare and the diagnosis
of a Leiomyosarcoma is still rarer.
Our case is one among the few cases reported
in literature. Unfortunately our patient
lost her precious child. Not to mention
in these scenarios the treatment is a multidisciplinary
approach and it also takes
into account the opinion of the patient and
their relatives
