SOFT TISSUE SARCOMA RECURRENCE IN FLAP DONOR SITE - CASE REPORT

MADHURI PARIJA

Abstract

Tumor recurrence in iatrogenically created wounds at sites remote from excision field is a well known entity in intraabdominal carcinomas and head and neck cancers.  However, recurrence of tumor in tissue donor site in soft  tissue sarcoma surgery is extremely rare. Only one case has been reported in literature till date. Here we report a case of undifferentiated sarcoma of the foot which recurred in flap donor site 14 months after excision surgery. The reason for such quasi local recurrences is not clear with direct                contamination by tumor cells, physical manipulation of the tumor and creation of surgical wounds with tumor supportive properties the various possible mechanisms advocated. Though these kind of recurrences are extremely rare,              nevertheless certain precautionary measures should be adopted during excision surgery. Also the possibility of such recurrences should be kept in mind while following up these patients.
