Tailgut Cyst (Retrorectal Cystic Hamartoma) - A Rare Retrorectal Lesion
Abstract
BACKGROUND - Tailgut cysts or retrorectal
cystic hamartomas are unusual
cystic lesions, typically found in the retrorectal
(presacral) space. Due to its rarity,
diagnosis is often delayed. They can
present as painless masses or with
symptoms of mass effect or complications
such as infection and recurrence.
Complete surgical excision is the treatment
of choice as malignant transformation
within the cyst, although atypical,
can occur. AIM AND METHODS - Here,
we present a case of a tail gut cyst which
illustrates the diagnosis and management.
CONCLUSION - Tailgut cysts are
rare lesions with variable clinical presentation.
It should be kept in mind as a differential
diagnosis for a retrorectal mass.
CT or MRI is the investigation of choice.
Complete surgical excision is indicated
