KANNAN PERIANNAN

Abstract

Small bowel volvulus (SBV) is a rare
cause of intestinal obstruction, but lifethreateningsurgical
emergency. In most
of the cases require early diagnosis and
treatment for a favourableoutcome. The
causes include bands, adhesions or internal
hernia. Central abdominal pain,
resistantto narcotic analgesic should
raise the suspicion of the diagnosis of
SBV and need vigorousmanagement to
reduce the morbidity and mortality. The
surgical options for SBV consists ofderotation,
with or without fixation, and resection
with anastomosis. A 56 year lady
with centralabdominal pain with features
of small intestinal obstruction,was admitted
as an emergency. Thepatient was
investigated and found to have volvulus
of ileum, which was gangrenous, and
wasresected and primary anastomosis
done. The post operative period was uneventfu
