Bilateral Pterygium in down’s Syndrome: a Rare Presentation

Abstract


Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused by an error in cell division resulting in the presence of an additional third chromosome 21 or trisomy 21. This syndrome is typically associated with physical growth delays, a particular set of facial characteristics and a severe degree of intellectual disability. They also have a higher prevalence of ocular disorders. The usual ocular findings are upward slanting of the palpebral fissure, epicanthal folds, astigmatism, iris abnormalities, strabismus, lacrimal system obstruction, blepharitis, retinal abnormalities, hyperopia, amblyopia, nystagmus, cataract, keratoconus and myopia. Here, we report management of a case of Down’s syndrome with bilateral pterygium, right eye with both nasal and

temporal pterygia.
