Malignant Mesenchymal Tumors of Maxilla: A case Series

Abhijit Das and Arvind Krishnamurthy .

Abstract

Introduction: Malignant Mesenchymal Tumors are

a heterogeneous group of malignancies that arise from

mesenchymal cell of origin. Management of head and neck

sarcoma remains a challenge due to rarity of cases

and lack of evidence based treatment guidelines. Maxilla

being reported as one of the common regions involved by

malignant mesenchymal tumors in the head and neck

region and they produce very few symptoms or signs while

the tumor is in its early stage. Material and Methods: In

this study the demographic, tumor, surgical and survival

parameters of all patients with a tissue diagnosis of

malignant mesenchymal tumors arising from the maxilla

between the years 2014 to 2017 were analyzed. Results:

The mean age of the study population was 38 years. Most

common presenting symptom among three patients was a

facial mass lesion. The mean duration of follow up is

12.4 months. Two patients were diagnosed with

osteosarcoma and rest of the patients were diagnosed

with leiomyosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma and

angiosarcoma each. In our study we encountered two loco

-regional recurrence and one death. Discussion: Head

and neck malignant mesenchymal tumors are a

heterogeneous group of malignancies with diverse cell of

origin and clinical presentation. Whenever feasible,

surgery is the central element in the treatment of malignant

mesenchymal tumors of head and neck region. But in view

of the anatomical constrains of the head and neck region,

achieving a R0 resection is not always possible.

Conclusion: Management of malignant mesenchymal

tumors of head and neck region continues to be a major

challenge for the multidisciplinary team due to the rarity of

cases and robust database in relation to it.
