Pancreatic Tumors in Pediatric Population an Experience from Tertiary Care Centre in South India
Abstract
Background: Pancreatic tumors are uncommon
in pediatric population. Solid pseudo papillary
tumors and neuroendocrine tumors (insulinomas) are the
most common type of pancreatic tumors in children.
Clinical presentation, histology and prognosis varies
from those of adults. Objective: Purpose of this study is
to review the demography, clinical presentation, imaging,
histological features, various surgical options that can
be adopted and the outcomes following Surgery.
Methods: Retrospective chart review of children<15 years
admitted in pediatric surgery ward at CMC Vellore between
2009 - 2016. Results: Two neuroendocrine tumors were
insulinomas. Both were excised completely without
requiring adjuvant therapy. Out of 8 solid pseudo papillary
tumors, 7 underwent complete tumor resection and
required no adjuvant treatment however 1 child had
recurrence and received chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Surgeries done were pylorus preserving Whipple’s
pancreatoduodenectomy, Central Pancreatectomy with
distal roux-en-y pancreaticojejunosotomy, distal
pancreatectomy. Postoperative CT/MRI showed no
recurrence or residual tumor. All 10 are alive and symptom
free till to date. Conclusions: Pancreatic resections in
children offer cure and long term survival.
