A comparative study of Tamsulosin, Nifedipine versus their combination in the management of Lower Ureteric Calculi
Abstract
Aim of study
In modern era treatment of lower ureteric stones has moved from open surgery to endoscopic and non invasive methods. Medical expulsive therapy can be a viable option. This study focuses on managing ureteric calculus with Nifedipine,Tamsulosin and combination of both the drugs and comparing the outcomes.
Method
58 symptomatic patients with lower ureteric calculi of size < 10 mm were randomly assigned to treatment with Tamsulosin, Nifedipine and combination of both drugs (group 1 to 3).Each group was given Diclofenac (50 mg) on demand. Primary end point was rate of expulsion and secondary end points were duration for stone expulsion, analgesic usage, need for admission to hospital and forms of treatment.
Conclusion
In the present study, onlyTamsulosin was found cost effective for lower ureteric stone expulsion therapy.Combination of both Tamsulosin and Nifedipine provided no added advantage is not cost effective.
