Unusual Presentation of Intracranial Aneurysms – A Clinical Study

Sivakumar A, Raghavendran R, Jothikumar .

Abstract

Background: A true aneurysm is a dilation of arterial lumen

as a consequence of congenital or acquired abnormalities. It

leads to reduction in mechanical resistance of vascular wall,

most commonly caused by its defected structure in the form

of absence or weakening of the muscular and/or elastic layer.

‘Saccular’type is the most commonly occurring cerebral

aneurysm and ‘other types’, including fusiform/dolichoectatic,

dissecting, serpentine, posttraumatic, mycotic and giant

aneurysms with or without intra-aneurysmal thrombosis.

Methodology: 4 cases of intracranial aneurysms and their

various presentationswere analyzed in this study.

Results and Conclusion: Aneurysm located within the

intracranial arteries is one of the most common vascular

defects of the brain. The number, size and location of

aneurysms are highly variable. Morbidity and mortality is

more with unusual forms and in patients with multiple

aneurysms.
