GIANT FIBROVASCULAR POLYP OF THE ESOPHAGUS- A RARE BENIGN TUMOR OF THE ESOPHAGUS

SUMIT SINGH

Abstract

Fibrovascular polyps arising from the esophagus are benign lesions that are quite rare. These are  mesenchymal, intraluminal and polypoid lesions. They are commonly seen in the cervical esophagus. The symptoms usually include regurgitation of a fleshy mass, dysphagia, odynophagia and respiratory symptoms. If undiagnosed or left untreated, they can increase in size and can cause life-threatening complications like asphyxiation. Surgical  excision is the treatment of choice although endoscopic  removal may be attempted in certain scenarios. We present here the case of a 54-yearold gentleman who presented with history of a mass regurgitating through the mouth. AIM- To highlight various aspects of management of Giant    fibrovascular polyps of the esophagus. OBJECTIVES- To highlight the suspicion of this disorder based on history, its confirmation using gastroscopy, EUS and CT scan, planning of the modality of excision, preoperative localization of the site of attachment to decide on the surgical approach. Also being addressed is the surgical technique of resection of these tumors. RESULTS- In our patient, the diagnosis was made on upper GI endoscopy. CT scan and EUS were used to             delineate the anatomy of the lesion. He was operated via a cervical approach. Post-operatively, he developed minor leak from the esophageal suture line. This was managed                  conservatively and the patient made a complete recovery.
