A RARE CASE OF EPITHELIAL SPLENIC CYST

ARULMURUGAN R

Abstract

Splenic cysts are unusual in everyday surgical practice. They can be parasitic (hydatid), caused by the   parasite Echinococcus granulosus, or nonparasitic1.  Non-parasitic cysts are classified as primary (true, epithelial), lined by an epithelial cover (epidermoid, dermoid, and  mesothelial) and secondary (pseudocysts, non-epithelial). Most of the cysts are asymptomatic, and they are incidental findings during abdominal imaging studies. Laparotomy with splenectomy has been the method of choice for the treatment of primary splenic cysts . The overall incidence of epithelial splenic cyst is 0.07. A 28 years old female presented with pain upper abdomen for six months. Clinical examination reveals only mild left hypochondrial tenderness. Per  operatively found to be a cystic mass arising from spleen for which splenectomy was done. HPE report came as epithelial splenic cyst. This case is presented for its rarity.
