Acute fatty liver of pregnancy AFLP

MALARVIZHI V

Abstract

AFLP is a rare but potentially fatal complication occuring in the third trimester of pregnancy. Although the exact   pathogenesis is unknown, it is found to be associated with abnormality in fatty acid metabolism in fetus. Early  diagnosis is often difficult because it shares similiar clinical features with HELLP, Viral hepatitis and cholestasis of  pregnancy. Careful histroy, physical examination and Laboratory investigations help in diagnosis of AFLP. Maternal stabilization with prompt delivery of fetus are the mainstay in the treatment of AFLP.
