A CASE OF PSUEDOMYXOMA PERITONEI SECONDARY TO ADENOCARCINOMA OF THE CAECUM

SABIN IRFAN C P

Abstract

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a poorly  understood condition affecting both sexes equally, with an increasing incidence with age1. It is characterized by  progressive intraperitoneal mucinous deposition from a mucin secreting tumour. Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a relatively rare condition. In nearly all the cases a mucocele of the appendix or a mucinous tumour from ovary was found to be the cause. As regards the distribution of adenocarcinoma of the large intestine is concerned approximately 65 occur in the   rectosigmoid area, 5 in the caecum and the rest are  distributed in other areas of the colon. Mucinous   adenocarcinomas are relatively rare among adenocarcinoma of large bowel. We report a case of a 42 year old male who presented to the OP with complaints of right sided lower  abdominal pain and discharging sinus in right lower abdomen of 20 days duration. On detailed evaluation it was found to be a mass involving caecum which was operated. It came out to be invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma of caecum with  pseudomyxoma peritonei. The case has been presented due to its rarity.
