GIANT ANTERIOR NECK LIPOMA WITHIN THE MUSCULAR COMPARTMENT IMICKING THYROID SWELLING - A RARE CASE REPORT

VINODH D

Abstract

Lipomas are the most common benign  mesenchymal tumour. Only Thirteen percent of lipomas are seen in head and neck region with the posterior cervical space being the most common site. Anterior neck is a rare location for lipoma with only few cases being reported, most of them being smaller in size which are located in the   subcutaneous plane often mimicking thyroid nodule. We  report a case of 55 year old male who presented with a huge swelling in the anterior neck region simulating a massive          goitre. Clinical examination, imaging with ultrasonography, computed tomography neck and fine needle aspiration  cytology helped in making a diagnosis of lipoma rather than a thyroid pathology. On surgery, a large lobulated fatty mass was removed from the muscular compartment of the anterior triangle of the neck, which was seen to consist of mature adipose tissue on histopathological examination. Giant  anterior neck lipomas (more than 10 cms) are extremely rare and those arising from muscular compartment of the neck are hardly known in literature.
