EFFECT OF SINGLE DOSE OF NEVIRAPINE IN PREVENTION OF MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV
Abstract
Aim To evaluate the efficacy of single
dose of Nevirapine in prevention of
mother to child transmission of HIV.
Method All women who tested positive
for HIV and delivered at Govt Raja Mirasudhar
Hospital,Thanjavur Medical College,
Thanjavur between the period of
Jan 2010 to July 2011 were included in
the study and were given Tab.Nevirapine
200mg prior to delivery and the newborn
was given Sy Nevirapine 2mgKg within
72 hrs of birth.Infants were tested for HIV
at 45th day of life with PCR. Results of
the 97 deliveries, there were 96 live
births.Of which 70 infants were followed
up. Of the 70 infants 5 tested positive for
HIV and 65 negative for HIV. The transmission
rate of HIV was 7.1.and the efficacy
of single dose of Nevirapine was
92.8.Conclusion The single dose Nevirapine
because of the ease of administration,
efficacy and low cost is effective
in prevention of mother
