Multidisciplinary Approach for Management of Arteriovenous Malformations Institute of Vascular Surgery MMC Experience

MARUTHU THURAI S SAMBANDAM

Abstract

AV Malformations are complex lesions
which are congenital and slow growing.
The treatment of AVMs poses significant
challenges to the surgeon and it has a
high recurrence rate.Multidisciplinary approach
integrating transcatheter pre and
post operative embolotherapy and sclerotherapy
with surgery offers optimal
choice of care for these enigmatic conditions.
In this single centre cohort of thirty
patients treated in our institution, the
treatment strategy has shifted from primary
surgery to multidisciplinary team
approach for the management of AVMs
with good results. Complications included
bleeding in one patient and facial
recurrence in three patients. Multidisciplinary
approach is the best course of care
for AVMs and offers good hope of cure in
multiple treatment sessions.
