RARE LOCATION OF A YOLK SAC TUMOUR IN THE NASOPHARYNX

Abstract

Yolk sac tumours also known as endodermal sinus tumours are common gonadal tumours below the age of 3 years. Extra gonadal location of the yolk sac tumour,  especially in the head and neck region is very rare. Here we present the case of a 3-year-old girl who presented with a nasopharyngeal mass, initially thought to be a clival  chordoma, which turned out to be an endodermal sinus       tumour on histopathological examination. CT and MRI  imaging showed an enhancing nasopharyngeal mass  extending to the oropharynx. Serum marker studies to   collaborate the diagnosis was also done and a diagnosis of yolk sac tumour of the nasopharynx was confirmed. The   tumour was completely surgically excised using coblation and then followed by 6 cycles of cisplatin based chemotherapy. At the end of 1 year after treatment there was no evidence of recurrence or metastasis.
