QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF PATIENTS SEEKING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Abstract


In recent years ,awareness for facial beauty and demand for orthodontic treatment has grown rapidly . It is well known that thorough understanding of psychological characteristics and motives of any patient is fundamental for success and failure of any treatment concerned with   orthodontic treatment  and these factors might affect patient satisfaction and adherence with treatment. The aim of the study is to assess the psychological characteristics of patient seeking orthodontic treatment . Method: A cross sectional study was conducted among 100 young adults between age 18-22..A questionnaire consisting of 22 multiple choice  questions were given  to the participants to assess their awareness ,attitude and psychological aspects of                      malocclusions and orthodontic treatment . Description               statistics and chi square test was done .Result : More than 60%male and 70%female were motivated to seek orthodontic treatment. Around 50%male and 70%female were more  concern about their facial appearance and esthetics. More than  80%male and 90%female had less issues in functional efficiency. Around 60%male and 70%female had awareness about orthodontic treatment procedures. Conclusion : This evidence based study concluded that psychological aspects for the patients has definite role in seeking orthodontic  treatment. All the subjects were also aware of the various treatment procedures in orthodontics. They are able to quantify the well being of their facial appearance.
