ACUTE URINARY RETENTION IN AN ADOLESCENT GIRL

Abstract

Massive hematocolpos resulting from imperforate hymen presenting as acute urinary retention in adolescent girl - a rare clinical scenario. A thirteen year old girl presented to emergency department with severe abdominal pain and history of not passing urine for past 48 hours . Gynaecological examination revealed the girl to have an imperforate hymen leading to massive hematocolpos . Ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis confirmed the clinical diagnosis of hematocolpos and hematometra. Immediate surgical intervention in the form of cruciate hymenotomy was performed. Postoperative recovery was uneventful. This case is mainly published to create awareness that a thorough pelvic examination is a must in a adolescent girl presenting with acute urinary retention to rule out rare condition like these.
