A vermiform appendix presenting in an inguinal hernia - a case report

JAYAPRAKASH V VARADHARAJAN

Abstract

Amyand's hernia is defined as an inguinal hernia with the hernial sac containing the appendix as the content. It is a rare disease, reported in 1 of cases of inguinal hernia. This disease is often very difficult to diagnose clinically, and most of the time it can be confused with an incarcerated or strangulated inguinal hernia. Often, it requires an emergency surgical treatment. This case report describes about a case of 60-year-old male who was admitted with right irreducible  inguinal hernia with early features of obstruction for whom emergency surgery was done, and sac contents were found to be appendix and part of caecum. As the appendix was found to be without inflammation, appendectomy was not done. Hernioplasty was done by using polypropylene mesh after reducing the contents. This case is reported for its rarity.
