A RARE PRESENTATION OF UNILATERAL RENAL AGENESIS AS RETROPERITONEAL CYST OF METANEPHRIC ORIGIN A CASE REPORT.

RAMKUMAR J JOTHIMAYACHARI

Abstract

Unilateral Renal Agenesis (URA) occurs
more frequently than bilateral renal agenesis
but is not easily detected from findings
on physical examination. Most autopsy
series suggest that unilateral renal
agenesis occurs once in 1100 births.
Retroperitoneal cysts are uncommon,
with an estimated incidence of 15750 to
1250,000. A 49 years male patient was
admitted with vague abdominal pain and
gradually increasing abdominal distension.
Clinical examination and investigations
confirmed unilateral renal agenesis
and retroperitoneal cyst. He underwent
surgery and was discharged after making
good recovery. Retroperitoneal cysts and
its association with Unilateral Renal
Agenesis are very rare, and mostly they
are discovered incidentally. Patients may
be asymptomatic or present with abdominal
pain, abdominal distension or weight
loss. Imaging may help to diagnose
these lesions, but surgery is the keystone
in confirming the diagnosis. This
case is very rare as it highlights an
unusual presentation of unilateral renal
agenesis as a retroperitoneal cyst of meanephric
origin.
