NEUROMYELITIS OPTICA SPECTRUM DISORDER

SARAN SARMA

Abstract

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), also known as         Devics disease is an idiopathic, severe demyelinating disease of central nervous system that preferentially affects optic nerve and spinal cord. After the development of highly    specific NMO IgG autoantibody, spectrum of disorders   comprising Devics disease was expanded to include     involvement of brain with or without optic nerve involvement and referred to as NMO spectrum disorder (NMOSD). 112 year old male child presented with acute onset right sided hemiplegia, whose neuroimaging revealed Demyelination of Brain and spinal cord with NMO IgG seropositivity with no clinical and ophthalmologic evidence of optic Neuritis and was diagnosed as NMOSD. Child was treated with steroids. Child partially responded to treatment and now on follow up. This case is presented for its unusual clinical presentation.
