USSHA G GOVINDHASAMY

Abstract

To study the incidence, demographical profile, risk factors and fetomaternal outcome in morbidly adherent            placenta. SETTINGS AND DESIGN Tertiary care centre. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective analysis in which data of 9 mothers with diagnosis of morbidly adherent placenta was reviewed from November 2012 to October 2013.RESULTS Totally 9 cases of morbidly adherent               placenta admitted during November 2012 October 2013. Incidence is 0.062. Out of 9 cases with diagnosis of morbidly adherent placenta, 7 cases were placenta previa. All patients had history of previous caesarean section. All patients            underwent total hysterectomy.3 cases required bladder repair and one required internal iliac artery ligation due to                 uncontrolled bleeding. Average blood transfusion needed was 4 units. There were two perinatal deaths and one maternal death during the study period. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of morbidly adherent placenta is increasing due to higher cesarean section (CS) rate. Key to successful outcome is awareness, anticipation, preoperative counseling, planning and multidisciplinary approach.
