A RARE CASE OF TOTAL LARGE BOWEL GANGRENE WITH SIGMOID VOLVULUS

SRINIVASAN K KUPPUSAMY

Abstract

Sigmoid volvulus with total gangrene of large bowel is an extremely rare presentation. In literature, we have cases of isolated volvulus or volvulus with gangrene of only a portion of large bowel. This is a case of a 26 yrs male, who presented with abdomen pain and distension for 5 days and clinically diagnosed as sigmoid volvulus with colonic           obstruction. Laparotomy revealed sigmoid volvulus with entire large bowel gangrene. Total colectomy with end ileostomy was performed. This case is presented for its rarity- total large bowel gangrene.
