A RARE CASE OF MESENTRIC ISCHEMIA DUE TO PROTEIN C PROTEIN S DEFICIENCY - A CASE REPORT

ARUN BABU JOSEPH BABUJOSEPH

Abstract

Mesenteric vein thrombosis is a rare but frequently lethal cause of intestinal ischaemia. It can occur due to              congenital hypercoagulable states or secondary to sepsis, gastrointestinal malignancy, liver disease, pancreatic             pathology, abdominal surgery and medications. The authors present a case of a 31 year male with features of intestinal obstruction, Contrast CT Abdomen suggestive of                    Pneumatosis intestinalis , Emergency laparotomy showing gangrene of a large portion of small bowel with thrombus in superior mesenteric vein. Axillary vein thrombosis in the              postoperative period . Coagulation profile study showing  Protein C, Protein S deficiency a rare disease causing a  hypercoagulable state, responsible for the mesenteric and axillary vein thrombosis.
