A Comparative study of three different Yoga module on short term memory in first year MBBS Students
Abstract
AIM To investigate possible improvement in short-term memory as measured by (ROCF) Rey osterrieth complex figure test and (RAVLT) Rey auditory verbal learning test, due to practice of pranayama and inverted yoga postures namely Sirsasana and shoulder stand. STUDY DESIGN Cohort study SAMPLE SIZE Total sample of 50 Group performing yoga 25 Group not performing yoga 25 INCLUSION CRITERIA Age 17-19 Years Females Able to read and write English EXCLUSION CRITERIA HO regular practice in yoga HO Head injury HO Epilepsy, neuropsychiatry disturbance Presence of Bony Deformity HO Drug intake for any chronic illness HO neuromuscular disorder HO hypertension, glaucoma HO birth asphyxia Materials and Methodology We divide the group into two namely study group and control group study group consists of 25 first-year M.B.B.S., students they are given yoga practice for 30 minutes five days in a week for four weeks. Memory test performed before starting yoga and at the end of 4th week (After finishing Yoga Practice). Control group consists of 25 first-year M.B.B.S., students they are not given yoga practice. Memory test is performed on day 1 and at the end of 4th week, and the data are analyzed by paired t - test. Results Clearly, p value is found to be significant in the study group tested for short-term memory by ROCF and RAVLT. It also states that p value is not significant in the control group tested for short-term memory by ROCF and RAVLT. The study shows pranayama (annuloma viloma and kapalabhathi) and inverted yoga postures namely Sirsasana and shoulder stand improves short term memory.
