Analysis Of Behavioral Satiety Sequence Of Fluoxetine In Wistar Albino Rats

SAISUDHA BHARATHI.K

Abstract

Background -Fluoxetine ( SSRI or selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitor ) is a drug
that is currently used as an antidepressant
and is being experimented as an anorectic.
The mechanism of its anorectic action
is poorly understood.Aim -The aim of the
study is to determine whether Fluoxetine is
a primary or a secondary anorectic reliably
by analyzing the behavioral satiety sequence
(BSS).Materials and methods -
Wistar male albino rats were randomly divided
into 2 groups with 6 animals in each
group. Fluoxetine 8 mg per kg was administered
orally to the test group and vehicle
(sterile water) to the control group for 14
days. Analysis of behavioral satiety sequence
(BSS ) was done after 14 days
comparing both the groups. Then the animals
were allowed a wash out period of 45
days after which the two groups were
crossed over and the same parameters
were studied.Results-The control group
exhibited normal behavioral satiety sequence
(BSS ) whereas Fluoxetine treated
animals showed acceleration of the behavioral
satiety sequence.Conclusion-A primary
anorectic acts by acceleration of the
behavioral satiety
sequence (BSS) whereas a secondary
anorectic acts by disruption of the sequence.
From this study we can conclude
that Fluoxetine is a primary anorectic
drug.
