Abstract

Background Women from the time of intrauterine life till the end of life, experience different stages in her reproductive life under the influence of female hormones. These hormones are secreted in minute quantity undergo a complex and ever changing milieu according to different phases of her                   reproductive life. These hormones play an important role in lipid metabolism. Oestrogen undergoes a definite change from           prepubertal to postmenopausal age. This present study is done to study the serum lipid profile in reproductive, perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Aims and objective To compare the lipid profile and atherogenic index among reproductive,  perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.Materials and method Thirty reproductive, thirty perimenopausal and thirty postmenopausal women were enrolled in the study after             institutional ethical clearance. Fasting lipid profile estimated and, atherogenic index calculated among the groups and results compared. Results The results showed gradual increase in total cholesterol, TGL,LDL-c and Atherogenic index and HDLc showed statistically significant decrease from reproductive to postmenopausal age women. Conclusion Total cholesterol, TGL,LDL-c and atherogenic index were higher and HDL-c levels were decreased from reproductive age group to                     postmenopausal women attributing to the changes in the      hormonal levels with decline in estrogen levels with age. This will help to take preventive measures like hormone replacement therapy to protect the postmenopausal women from coronary artery disease (CAD).
