OCCURRENCE OF THYROID DYSFUNCTION IN PATIENTS WITH PSYCHIATRIC DISTURBANCES
Abstract
The TFT results of psychiatric patients are frequently abnormal. Though the inter relation of neural networks and the interference of the drugs are known, our quest is to examine whether any pattern exist in thyroid function test results of psychiatric patients. We examined 327 cases attending psychiatry department in 6 months period. The TFT result, ICD10 based diagnosis, treatment history are analyzed. In mood disorders, both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are seen in significantly increased proportion. In schizophrenia, only hypothyroidsm is significantly increased. Other psychiatric illness doesnt show any pattern.
