AGENESIS OF ISTHMUS OF THYROID GLAND IN AN ADULT MALE CADAVER - A CASE REPORT

RAJA JK KIRUPAKARAN

Abstract

A wide range of morphological variations and anomalies of the thyroid gland have been described in literature. They include ectopic thyroid, hypoplasia, hemigenesis and agenesis of isthmus. In an adult male cadaver the thyroid gland shows absence of isthmus. The thyroid gland has two separate lateral lobes and a single pyramidal lobe with attached levator glandulae thyroideae on the right lobe. A sound knowledge of this variation is important for Clinicians, Radiologist and Anatomist.
