Phantom limb sensation in a paraplegic with below knee amputation - A case report.

PRASHANTH H CHALAGERI CHALAGERI

Abstract

Phantom limb sensation is seen in about 80 to 90 percent of amputees. The incidence of amputation with spinal cord injury is relatively rare and phantom limb sensation in such a person has been sparingly described in literature.   Rehabilitation following spinal cord injury is in itself a  challenging task. The presence of a below knee amputation makes it more challenging with the mysterious phantom limb sensation complicating the process of rehabilitation further. This is a case report of a paraplegic who underwent right below knee amputation subsequently and reported of phantom limb sensation in the amputated right leg.
