A rare case of Middle interhemispheric variant (MIH) or Syntelencephaly (a rare milder subtype of Holoprosencephaly)- A Rehabilitation challenge

ANTONY SEBASTIAN DCRUZ

Abstract

Syntelencephaly or Middle interhemispheric           variant (MIH) is a rare subtype of holoprosencephaly (HPE) in which the posterior frontal and parietal areas lack midline separation, whereas more polar areas of the cerebrum are fully cleaved by the interhemispheric fissure. We describe an eight year old boy who presented with motor developmental delay and gait abnormality, in whom the magnetic resonance imaging revealed MIH. His ambulation was affected, but the language, social, learning and adaptive skills were much in advance of his motor abilities. We discuss the rehabilitation measures including gait training and training in independence of activities of daily living (ADLs) given to this child and the necessity of long term rehabilitation measures for similar cases.
