Rapid recovery in Bone Mineral Density and Bone Turnover Markers after parathyroidectomyin primary hyperparathyroidism.

NITIN KAPOOR

Abstract

Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism
(PHPT) generally display reduced
bone mass due to excessive parathormone
activity. In India, PHPT still presents
with significant bone disease like
multiple fractures and severe osteoporosis.
An improvement in bone density and
bone turnover markers(BTM) usually occurs
after parathyroid surgery and this
aspect has not yet been adequately studied
in an Indian context. We present a
patient with PHPT who made a very significant
improvement in BMD and BTM
as early as 6 months.
