Sigmoid Volvulus In Hypothyroidism - A Rare Complication

Abstract


Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder. Gastro - Intestinal manifestations of hypothyroidism include decreased intestinal motility ranging from mild obstipation to paralytic ileus and intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Sigmoid volvulus is a rare complication of hypothyroidism and is a surgical emergency requiring acute intervention. A 66 year old man presented with chief complaints of abdominal pain, distension, obstipation for 3 days, increased urine output and increasing breathlessness for 2 days. He was a known case of hypothyroidism on 100 micrograms of oral Levothyroxine for past 13 years. His abdomen was Distended, Umbilicus flushed with surface and Bowel sounds were increased. He was diagnosed as a case of Hypothyroidism with Sigmoid Volvulus and underwent emergency resection and Hartmann’s colostomy. This case report highlights this rare complication hypothyroidoism which could present as surgical emergency.
