A Study on Prevalence of Mupirocin Resistance In Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) from Surgical wound Infections in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract


Abstract     

 Aim &Objective: This study was aimed at determining the prevalences of low and high level Mupirocin resistance among the clinical isolates of MRSA species which were   obtained from surgical site infections.

Material and Method: Wound swabs were collected from patients admitted in Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai and submitted to the microbiology laboratory during a period of four months and were screened for the growth ofStaphylococcus species, which were identified as            Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulase negative Staphylococcus species by the routine microbiological  procedures. MRSA were identified by using 30µg cefoxitin disc. All the MRSA isolates were tested for their Mupirocin susceptibilities by using 5 and 200 μg discs.

Result: Out of 172 samples, 137 samples grew Staphylococcus species, of which 100 were Staphylococcus aureus and 37 were Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS). Among the 100 Staphylococcus aureus 52 (52%)were MRSA. The prevalence of low level Mupirocin resistance was11.5% and high level Mupirocin resistance was 4% among the isolated MRSA.

Conclusion: We conclude that the screening for mupirocin resistance, in terms of high-level and low-level resistance among the MRSA species from patients with surgical site infection is important for the clinicians in selecting the   appropriate, empirical, topical, antimicrobial therapy. It also provides useful information about the prevalence of these resistant pathogens.Key words: Methicillin-resistant     Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Coagulase negative   Staphylococcus (CoNS), High and Low level mupirocin    resistance.
