Primary adenosquamous carcinoma of the Esophagus : A rare case report

Kokila K, Bharathi Vidhya Jayanthi, Geet .

Abstract

Primary adenosquamous carcinoma of the esophagus is a rare malignancy. It is difficult to confirm histologically by endoscopic biopsy. It can arise de novo or from a pre             existing Barrett’s  esophagus. The modality of treatment is surgical resection. It has an aggressive biological behavior when compared to conventional squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. We reported a case of adenosquamous carcinoma of the esophagus in a   44 year old male who initially underwent endoscopic biopsy which showed                features of poorly differentiated carcinoma. In the resection specimen, both squamous and adeno carcinoma                   components were found and confirmed by                                immunohistochemical expression. A thorough sampling of the resected specimen is essential in cases of poorly                         differentiated carcinomas because adenosquamous                  carcinoma of the esophagus has an aggressive                 clinical behavior. This case is being published                  because of  its rarity and the diagnostic challenges faced  in endoscopic biopsy interpretation.
