Anaesthetic Management of Right Atrial Myxoma - A Case report

Kethavath Anitha and Santha Arulmozhi .

Abstract

Cardiac  myxomas account for 50% of all benign   primary cardiac tumors. Rarely, these tumors occur in right atrium ( 10 - 20% )  with a stalk frequently attached to inter atrial septum. Right atrial myxomas can lead to right atrial enlargement, arrhythmias, functional tricuspid stenosis, right heart failure and catastrophic pulmonary embolization resulting in sudden cardiac death. Anaesthetic              management of patients with right atrial myxomas can be complicated by mass  effect  of  myxoma, preload         limitations and potential for cardiovascular collapse. when diagnosed, these tumors  need to be surgically excised as early as possible as these are known to cause dangerous complications. we present a case of right atrial myxoma in a 42 year old male patient who underwent excision of  right atrial mass on cardiopulmonary bypass under general

anaesthesia.

Right atrial myxoma, cardiopulmonary  bypass.
