Abstract

Aim and objective: To evaluate the analgesic     potentiating effect of Guaifenesin in sub therapeutic dose of paracetamol in albino mice. Materials and Methods: 30 inbred male albino mice weighing about 20-30 gms were selected from central animal house. They were divided into five groups, with six mice in each. The control received distilled water.  Standard received T. aspirin 100mg mg/kg (oral).  Test I   received T.Paracetmol -100 mg/kg (oral). Test II received T. Guaifenesin -200 mg/kg (oral). Test III received T.Paracetmol -100 mg/kg + T. Guaifenesin 200 mg/kg (oral).  The analgesic effect was evaluated using Eddy’s hot plate method and  tail-clip method. The values obtained are expressed as mean ± SEM. Statistical analysis of differences between groups was carried out using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Probability (P) value of <0.05 was taken as the level of  statistical significance. Results: Combination of Guaifenesin and sub therapeutic dose of paracetamol showed statistically significant analgesic activity in comparison with control group (P < 0.05). Guaifenesin by itself did not exhibit any analgesic property.  Conclusion: Combination of Guaifenesin and sub therapeutic dose of paracetamol showed statistically significant analgesic activity in comparison with control group (P < 0.05).

 Keywords: Guaifenesin, Paracetamol, Analgesic   activity.
