Bicipital Rib – A Case Report

Lakshmi Gayathri G B, Vino Victor Jesu .

Abstract

Introduction:  Ribs are the essential components of the  thoracic cage. Variations in the ribs includes short ribs, forked ribs or bifid ribs, fused ribs or bicipital ribs etc. These rib anomalies are usually detected during routine chest              radiography.

Observation: The present case of rib anomaly was found in the osteology lab of the Institute of Anatomy, Madurai Medical College. This rib was unique with two heads and two            tubercles.  Careful examination of the bone revealed the  fusion of the body of the first and second ribs which has         occurred, 2.5cms from the tubercle of the first rib obliterating the first intercostal space. The costal ends of both the ribs were separate. Features like scalene tubercle, scalenus          medius muscle impression were noted. Such kind of              Bicipital rib is found to have an incidence of 0.3%.

Conclusion:  These rib anomalies are usually asymptomatic but may also cause any musculoskeletal pain or nerve         entrapment. It might be associated with any underlying           systemic disease. Hence a comprehensive knowledge of such anomalies is essential for the radiologists, surgeons, clinicians etc.

Keywords: Rib anomalies, Bifid ribs, Bicipital ribs, Nerve entrapment.
