A Study on quality of bowel preparation in colonoscopy and predictors of inadequate bowel preparation

Itish Patnaik .

Abstract

Background: Failure to adequately prepare the bowel for colonoscopy can result in both failed detection of neoplastic lesions and an increased risk of procedural adverse events.Inadequate bowel preparation is one of the most importantcauses for incomplete colonoscopy. Aims and objectives : To asses quality of colonoscopy preparation and predictors of inadequate colonoscopy preparation with the aim of improving performance. Methods: Patients who underwent colonoscopy in June 2017 were prospectively included. Results: Total 54   patients were included.  36   were males and 18 were   females.Suspected IBD (18.5%) was the most common indication followed by IBS (16.7%). Bowel preparation was adequate in 49 (90.7%), and in adequate in 5 (9.3%) patients, respectively. Caecal intubation was achieved in 53 patients (97.8%).Inadequate preparation was more common  when IBD, constipation and colorectal cancer were indications for colonoscopy .Patients who were admitted, who had long waiting time, who were not compliant with instruction had also  inadequate bowel preparation. Association between inadequate bowel preparation and above mentioned factors did not reach a statistically significant level. Summary:This study showed that most of the patients (90.7%) in our centrehad adequate bowel preparation .Patient-specific factors help to identify patients at an increased risk for inadequate colonic preparation for whom alternative preparation techniques should be employed. The results of this study should be validated in larger study sample.
