An Interesting Case of Pyelonephritis
Abstract
67 year old gentle man known case of renal stone
disease was admitted with complaints of right loin pain, fever,
reduced urine output and swelling of limbs for the past 10
days. On evaluation found to have right side pyelonephritis
with staghorn calculi, left hydroureteronephrosis and acute on
chronic kidney disease. He underwent nephrectomy in view of
worsening clinical course. Histopathological examination
proved to be xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis. He was
improved well after nephrectomy. Xanthogranulomatous
pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare but devastating disease. It can
be managed surgically. The overall prognosis for XGP is
good. Death from this entity is exceedingly rare, although
morbidity is substantial.
