Balloon mitral valvuloplasty in pregnancy: case report and review of literature

Abstract


Percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PBMV) is the preferred treatment modality for pregnant women with severe rheumatic mitral stenosis who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy. We hereby report a case, 21 year old pregnant woman with severe rheumatic mitral stenosis with favourable valve morphology for PBMV. Successful valvuloplasty was performed under elaborate safety precautions to reduce fetal radiation exposure and optimal results were obtained.
