Huntington's disease presenting with Predominant Psychotic Features – A Rare Presentation

Bhuvaneswari E .

Abstract

Huntingtons disease (HD) is a rare dominantly inherited, neurodegenerative disorder presenting with motor, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms. The disorder generally presents with neurological symptoms like chorea but it can present with psychiatric features like depressed mood, anxiety, irritability, apathy, personality change and psychotic symptoms. In this case report, we present a case of HD presenting predominantly with psychotic features. This report is important as it adds value to the literature about the varied presentation of Huntingtons disease. It also shows that the molecular abnormalities in HD can produce schizophrenia like symptoms and useful in delineating the underlying pathogenesis in schizophrenia.
