Elevated S.adenosine deaminase activity in acute viral hepatitis

Sunitha Priya .

Abstract

Acute viral hepatitis is characterised by hepatocellular necrosis with portal and lobular lymphocytic infiltration. As a marker of cell mediated immunity, Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity is elevated in diseases like acute viral hepatitis where there is a cell mediated immune response. Further elevated ADA indicates that there is an oxidative damage in acute viral hepatitis. The aim of the study is to evaluate the adenosine deaminase activity in patients with acute viral hepatitis patients and to find out the correlation with other markers of hepatitis.Study group included 50 individuals aged 20 to 60 years who were clinically diagnosed as acute viral hepatitis with total bilirubin level greater than 1.2 mg per dl and the control group included 50 healthy individuals. ADA activity in the study group (77.98 ) was significantly high when compared to the control group (26.94 )and the p value is statistically significant. ADA activity was significantly correlated with T.Bilirubin (r 0.876, p less than 0.01) and T.Protein (r -0.680, p less than 0.01). The present study showed an increased level of ADA in the study group which indicates that there is an oxidative stress in acute viral hepatitis. Measurement of ADA level may be sensitive to diagnose acute viral hepatitis in addition to routine liver parameters
