Neonate with large oral cavity Teratoma-An anaesthetic challenge

Abstract


18 days old female neonate with oral teratoma for excision biopsy. The swelling arising from the hard palate. This swelling interfered with closing of the mouth and feeding difficulty. The baby was assessed under ASA 1. Preoperatively sedative premedication was not given. In operation theatre, Intravenous lines were secured and monitors were connected. Awake oral intubation was attempted. But was unsuccessful. Second attempt with sevoflurane inhalation induction 2-4 for 2 minutes with oxygen and intubated. Maintenance with N2O O2, sevoflurane and atracurium. At the end of surgery baby was reversed and extubated in awake state. Biopsy was confirmed to be mature teratoma. The baby was discharged at ninth postoperative day without any untoward event
