ANAESTHETIC MANGEMENT OF A PATIENT WITH ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT AND WOLF PARKINSON WHITE SYNDROME FOR EMERGENCY LAPAROTOMY
Abstract
Atrial septal defect is an acyanotic congenital heart disease , which may remain
undetected for many years. Patients may remain asymptomatic till adult hood depending on the size
of the defect and development of pulmonary artery hypertension .Its association with WPW syndrome
is very rare. Under anaesthesia both hemodynamics of cardiac shunts as well as electrophysiology of
A-V conduction system tend to undergo changes ,hence these patients are prone for both reversal of
shunt and life threatening arrhythmias in the perioperative period. This is a case report of successful
management of a patient with ASD and WPW syndrome who underwent emergency laparotomy for
ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
